Leadership and Volunteer Opportunities and Volunteer Needs

Centro Latino has a hardworking student body, dedicated staff and an active Board of Directors. Our ambitious strategic plan will require the talents and time of many more people.  Please review these opportunities and fill out the Leadership and Volunteer Information Form at the bottom of this page. Leadership Opportunities:

Fund Development Committee – Guides the development and implementation of the Fund Development Plan

Chair: Al Arguello, Senior Vice President, Community Development, Bank of America

Event Subcommittee – Plans two annual events, the Manos Amigas (Helping Hands) Celebration (and on-line auction) in October and the Literacy Marathon in March.

Enterprise Subcommittee – Analyzes and develops earned income strategies, including marketing and sales of literacy software, training and consulting on literacy development, and creating cause marketing opportunities.

Marketing Committee – Develops and guides implementation of the organizational Marketing Plan, addressing internal and external audiences in Spanish and English

Chair:  Patricia Testa, General Manager, KNLA-TV 27

Media Relations Subcommittee – Develops and implements specific plans for media coverage. Includes PR and media professionals as well as Centro Latino students.

Program Committee – Develops and helps implement strategies for strengthening and evaluating existing programs, developing new ones, creating new partnerships and recruiting volunteers

Financial Education Subcommittee – Shapes the strategies and tools for effective and action-oriented financial education.

Volunteer Opportunities:

TUTORING - For these opportunities only, please contact Robyn Wasserman, Volunteer Program Coordinator, Literacy Network of Greater Los Angeles (LNGLA)* or by phone at (213) 237-3010. (As our partners, LNGLA screens and trains volunteers interested in tutoring at Centro Latino.):

Literacy Tutoring – work with Spanish speaking adult literacy students, one-on-one or in small groups

Computer Skills Tutoring – work with Korean and Pilipino seniors to help them learn basic computer skills

Cataloguing Books and Other Teaching Resources – help us set up and manage a literacy resource library

Cleaning and Maintenance – periodic cleaning and maintenance, such as carpet cleaning, window washing, gum removal

Computer Maintenance – assist with de-bugging and maintaining hardware and software in Mac and PC labs and offices

Data Analysis – analyze student demographic data and educational progress

Office Assistance – help with copying, filing, data entry, and organizing donations

Outreach – distribute program fliers to neighborhood sites

Transcription and Translation – transcribe interviews with literacy students and family members and translate transcripts from Spanish to English

Videography – videotape interviews with adult literacy students to capture and share their remarkable life stories

Website Updating – check and maintain updated website links, text and photos

Workshop Presentations – develop and conduct one-time workshops on special topics of interest to our student body (i.e. basic computer graphic design, using technology tools for marketing, arts workshops, etc.)
