Mission & Values
Centro Latino's mission is to teach literacy and provide educational opportunities to those who have not had the benefit of an education, especially Latino immigrants.
Most of our literacy students grew up in poor, rural communities in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. At an early age, they went to work, usually helping in the fields, cooking, cleaning, or caring for younger siblings. Their families were too poor to afford shoes, bus fare or school supplies. They have had to struggle to survive and now, as youth and adults, they are motivated to learn to read and write to increase their wages, learn English, help their children learn, take care of their own or a family member's health, manage their own finances, and/or fulfill a lifelong dream. These learners range in age from 12 to 82, but the vast majority are in their 20s and 30s.
Values
We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn to read and write. Literacy is not only a supremely practical tool but also a liberating experience.
We value the contributions of Latin American immigrants to the United States and treat all our students with the respect they deserve.
We will only succeed if we work with our students as full partners and encourage them to reach for their own dreams.
We believe in the capacity of people from all walks of life to develop creative solutions to difficult situations. Our role is to listen to, encourage, share and experiment with new ideas to expand our collective impact.
